Diets and Nutritional Myths

When I saw my scale tip 248 lbs. and saw how hard it has become to buy clothes that fit comfortably I set out on a mission to take care better care of myself and decrease my weight. My HTN also played a role in my dedication to this choice, but how to do it? I have made this attempt so many times in the past. I decided to apply myself to this task the same way I worked in my profession. I might ad that I am a physician, but that doctors in general are not well schooled about diets in training and I decided to try to correct this.

It took about a year to lose 60 lbs. I had been smoking, drinking, eating fried foods to excess and not really exercising with any regularity. Working on weight reduction and improving overall health.  I worked with a friend of mine that had gotten up to 315 lbs and she has passed the 100 lbs losing mark. Sometimes the weight came off faster and sometimes slower, but I continued on this path of learning and incorporating what I found out.

My friend and I exercise and have adjusted our diets, we are never starving and we feel a world better than when we started. I thought I might share some of what I've come across here.

Some popular fad diets that you might see online:

  • Paleolithic or paleo diet: concentrating on foods that people ate during human development (paleolithic era)
  • Low carb diets, Atkins, South Beach and others: decreasing carbohydrate intake
  • Slow carb diets: avoiding foods with a high glycemic index
  • Whole foods: avoid eating food that is highly processed
  • Mediteranean diet: olive oil?
  •

Before really looking at individual diets we need to learn about some basics so we can understand reasoning behind food choices:
  • Building blocks of food
  • Calories- what are they?
  • What is a glycemic index?
  • Metabolism and calory requirements
  • Exercise-what is it and why do it?
  • Setting goals, how to measure yourself and what is important
  • Organic and natural foods, gluten and fructose
  • Oils- fact or fiction?
  • Hormones and physiology, woman vs man, differences by time of life
  • Looking at big changes, psychology, why change?

After coming to an understanding of some of these things we will be in a better position to look at diets and try to understand the role of health and diet supplements.
